Objective: To study the expression of human papilloma virus(HPV)16 E6 protein and p73 in squamous cell carcinoma(SC) of the cervix and cervical intraepithelial neoplasm(CIN) and their relationship with clinicopathology. Methods: Immunohistochemical methods was performed to detect the expression of HPV16 E6 protein and p73 in 10 cases of normal tissue of cervix,22 cases of CIN and 38 cases of SC of the cervix. The association of expression of them was analyzed. Results: The positive rate of HPV16-E6 protein in different cervix tissues was:0% in the normal cervix, 40.9% in CIN and 78.9% in SC, respectively. The positive rate of p73 in different cervix tissues was:80.0% in the normal cervix, 59.1% in CIN and 21.1% in SC, respectively. The difference of overall positive rate had statistical significance(P<0.05). The expression rate of HPV16-E6 protein was related to the histological grade. The expression rate of p73 was inversely related to that of p63(r=-0. 301, P = 0. 011).Conclusion: The expression of HPV16-E6 protein may be interrelated to the incidence and progression of cervical squamous cell carcinoma. The expression of p73 gradually decreases while the development of cervical tumors is upgrading, which indicates that p73 may be a tumor suppressor gene of cervical cancer.
