Objective: Five Element Acupuncture(FEA), as a unique “Western Chinese Medicine”,born in British in the 1960 s. The theory and clinic practice of it had been affected by the local culture and modern medicine. Taking the FEA as research model helps to learn more about Chinese culture transmission in the west, to analyze the pattern of overseas transmission of Chinese Medicine, and to enrich cultural connotation in Chinese Medicine.Methods: With literature research and anthropological fieldwork survey, from its oriental and occidental philosophy and medicine foundation, basic concepts, diagnosis and treatment aspects, the foundation backgrounds, the academic traditions and thoughts of FEA were analyzed.Results: Acupuncture have a long history with three stages in British that the local government have paid more attention to and people gradually increase the acceptance, which provides a wealth of resources for the establishment and development of FEA; J. R. Worsley, the founder of FEA, had inherited many kinds of acupuncture tradition from China(Taiwan and Hong Kong), Japan, Korea, France,Germany, Vietnam, Singapore and other countries and areas; The philosophy and medical foundation of FEA are based on the integration of Chinese and western tradition; FEA’s basic concepts come from Chinese and Japanese acupuncture schools which related to Five Element theory; FEA emphasizes the diagnosis of the Causative Factor(CF); FEA emphasizes “human-oriented”, pays attention to the treatment of three level of “body-mind-spirit”, particularly “spirit” level treatment.Conclusion: Inheriting and innovating philosophy and medicine tradition oforiental and occidental, FEA is characteristic and eclectic, which adapted ancient forms for present-day use, Chinese medicine for Western use, mixed the theories and methods of five element from China and psychotherapy from the west, enriched the theories and methods of TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine). FEA has important significance for traditional cultural transmission, which provides reference and enlightenment for the development of TCM overseas transmission.
