Genus Kadsura Kaempf. ex Juss. belongs to Schisandraceae. This genus consists of about 28 species in the world. Plants of this genus are often used as folk medicine in China and Japan. There are around 10 species distributed in China from southeast to southwest parts including Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, etc. The stems of Kadsura plants are often called Zi-Jin-Pi and Feng-Teng in south parts of China, and they are used to treat rheumatism, bruises, stomach disorder and other diseases. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Kadsura plants have various biological activities such as anticancer, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-platelet aggregation, antibacterial, liver protection and many other functions, and most of these activities can be attributed to lignanoids and triterpenoids. Therefore discovering new active constituents from Kadsura plants is becoming a research focus in the field of natural products research.Kadsura heteroclita (Roxb.) Craib is a vine plant and it is mainly distributed in the hillside and edge of the woods at an altitude from 400 to 2000 meters. The stems and roots of this species can be used for medicinal purposes. This plant is the original plant of a folk medicine Di-Xie-Xiang and it is also a major source of Dian-Ji-Xie-Teng. The main functions are dispelling qi and dampness, promoting qi and relieving pain, relaxing and activating tendons. The fruit of this plant can also be used as a traditional drug to treat lumbago due to kidney-asthenia, neurasthenia and bronchitis. We investigated the chemical constituents of this plant collected in Jinxiu County, Guangxi Province,16 chemical constituents were isolated from the 95% ethanol extract of the stems of this plant and 15 of them were identified by various spectroscopic techniques including 7 lignans (3 diarylbutanes,4 tetrahydrofurans),1 triterpenoid,2 sesquiterpenoids,2 steroids,1 fat acid and 2 easters. Among them,7 compounds were isolated from this genus the first time, and 2 compounds were isolated from this species for the first time.Kadsura longipedunculata Finet et Gagnep was first recorded in the ancient document Supplement to Compendium of Materia Medica. Its dry roots and vine stems are used for medicinal purposes in the folk with the functions of regulating the flow of qi to alleviate pain, dispelling wind to remove obstruction in the meridians, and promoting blood circulation to disperse swelling. Now it has been included in local Chinese Materia Medica Standards in Fujian, Hunan and Guizhou. To develop and utilize this species further, discover new biological constituents and provide quality evaluation reference, we investigated the chemical constituents of Kadsura longipedunculata collected in Lushan, Jiangxi. A total of 25 compounds were isolated from methanol extracts of this plant, and 21 of them were identified including 10 lignans (5 dibenzocyclooctadienes,1 spirobenzofuranoid dibenzocyclooctadiene,2 diarylbutanes,1 aryltetralin,1 tetrahydrofuran),2 triterpenoids,2 flavanols,3 glycerides,2 steroids,2 fat acids. Among them,2 compounds were new compounds,1 compound was a new natural product,6 compounds were isolated from this genus the first time, and 3 compounds were isolated from this species for the first time.Five shared constituents were isolated from these two species, of which weso-dihydroguaiaretic acid and (+)-anwulignan are both of high content, and they can be considered as marker components in quality evaluation of crude drugs. Based on literatures, there are more diarylbutanes, tetrahydrofurans and aryltetralins in Kadsura longipedunculata while more dibenzocyclooctadienes and spirobenzofuranoid dibenzocyclooctadienes are indentified from Kadsura heteroclite. It is recommended that Kadsura longipedunculata should be translated into Chang-Geng-Nan-Wu-Wei-Zi in Chinese to avoid confusion and ensure medication safety.
