Plants of Ceriops tagal(Rhizophoraceae) belong to true mangrove growing in tropical and subtropical intertidal estuarine zones. The residents treated malaria by decocting leaves of C.tagal in China and treated hemorrhage and malignant ulcers using bark in India. It is reported that the crude extract of the plant can be used for treatment of hepatitis and diabetes. In recent years, C. tagal is valued for containing diterpene that has significant antitumor activity.Terpenes, sterols, lignans, flavonoids and aromatic series had been isolated and identified from Ceriops. Triterpenoids and diterpenes are the main secondary metabolites of Ceriops according to the previous chemical investigations. To date, 59 diterpenes(6 types) and 40triterpenoids(3 types) and 6 dimer-diterpenes have been separeted from Ceriops. The isolated terpenes exhibited various bioactivities. In order to further investigate the active ingredients and medicinal value of C. tagal, multiple chromatographic separation technologies, such as macroporous resin column chromatography, silica gel column chromatography, HPLC were used. 23 compounds were isolated and identified, including 13 diterpenes, 4 lignans and 6 others. Structures of the isolated compounds were identified as ent-8(14)-pimarane-15, 18-diol(1), ent-8(14)-pimarane-16,18-dihydroxy-15-one(2), Tagalsin X(3), Tagalsin Y(4), Tagalsin W(5), agalsin V(6), Tagalsin S(7), ent-5α, 2, 15-dioxodolabr-3-ene-3, 16-diol(8), ent-16-nor-5α, 2-oxodolabr-3-ene-3-ol-15-oic acid(9), Tagalsin P(10), Tagalsin Q(11), ent-5α, 3, 15-dioxodolabr-1, 4(18)-diene-2,16-diol(12), ent-16-nor-3-oxodolabr-1, 4(18)-diene-2-ol-15- oic acid(13),(-)-syringaresinol(14), medioresinol(15), pinoresinol(16), lirioresinol-A(17), 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid diisobutyl ester(18), 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid butyl isobutyl ester(19), 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid dibutyl ester(20), Lichenxanthone(21), emodin monomethyl ether(22), coniferyl aldehyde(23). The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data(new compounds) or comparison with data in the literature(known compounds).Compounds 1~6 were new compounds.
