Objective: To investigate the feasibility of assessment method using high frequency ultrasound for evaluating treatment effect of port-wine stains in children. Methods: 40 patients random patients diagnosed with port-wine stains, aging from 50 months to 90 months, having craniofacial skin lesion, receiving pulsed dye laser therapy were selected. High frequency ultrasound(Derma Lab Combo, Cortex, Denmark) was used to measure skin thickness and microvessel density before and after a course of pulsed dye laser treatment. Traditional method was used to evaluated the treatment effect. And according to the evaluating results, patients were divided into 4groups, including curative group, excellent group, effective group and invalid group. The results of high frequency ultrasound measurement of each group were analyzed. Results: 1. There is no statistical significance in skin thickness and microvessel density of health skin between each group.2.The skin thickness before treatment in curative group(827.45±59.16 um,30.58±3.86) and excellent group(840.95±72.91 um,27.10±2.41)are thiner than that in effective group(863.19±67.26 um,23.90±4.38)and invalid group(870.30±54.37 um,22.45±2.57), and the microvessel density before treatment in curative group and excellent group are denser than that in effective group and invalid group. And there is statisfical significance between curative group(785.67±47.23 um,39.07±3.86), excellent group(809.60±58.85 um,38.29±3.50) and effective group(834.11±43.67 um,32.90±2.46), invalid group(861.86±64.40 um,24.62±2.71), respectively.3.The skin thickness gets thiner and the microvessel density gets denser of curative group, excellent group and effective group after treatment. There is statisfical significance in the changes of skin thickness and microvessel density in curative group, excellent group and effective group. And there is no statisfical significance in the changes of skin thickness and microvessel density in invalid group. Conclusion: The skin thickness and microvessel density of lesion and health skin in children with port-wine stains can be measured by high frequency ultrasound, and high frequency ultrasound can be used to evaluate the treatment effect of port-wine stains in children.
