The way of freehand brushwork is widely used in Wash Painting at present. The TangDynasty witnesses the peak of Chinese painting as well as the maturity and thriving of WashPainting which has been imparted enthusiastic artistic spirit in the active atmosphere ofTang. The unconstrained and tremendous momentum, the dignified and elegant brush, withthe addition of the literati-style quality shown in Wash Painting, all perfectly disclose theepochal aesthetic orientation--the sentiment full of self-confidence and life-devotion. As anew artistic form booming in the Tang Dynasty, which conveys some idea of the Tangpeople’s way to understand and express the world, the Wash Painting naturally bears theirvalues and artistic pursuit. The epochal spirit embodied in the Wash Painting, the painter’sindividual spirit, and the the freehand spirit implied by the Wash Painting itself, whichcontain rich and profound philosophical ideas and personal feelings, reflect the social andpolitical life of a certain era from various aspects. It can therefore be said that the ink andplastic beauty of Wash Painting reflect something like era spirit and painters’ individualconsciousness. Through the arrangement of some existing historical materials in thehistorical angle, the author, in the hope of finding out about the freehand spirit embodied inWash Painting of Tang Dynasty, tries to provide people with new recognition on thedevelopment and the freehand spirit of Wash Painting in the Tang Dynasty.
