There are two different kinds of spatial encoding---categorical spatial relations andcoordinate spatial relations which are called processing subsystems. In order to verify thedifference between categorical spatial encoding and coordinate spatial encoding, we’vedesigned three studies. Study I, stimuli with the representation of categorical spatialrelations were made as the prime stimulus to explore the difference in categorical andcoordinate spatial relations by the way of comparing prime stimuli and probe stimuli. StudyII, stimuli with the representation of coordinate were made as the prime stimuli to exploretheir differences. Study III, the representation of category and coordinate was used as primestimuli, so that we can verify their defference indirectly. Conclusions are as follows:1. Prime stimuli with categorical representation influenced categorical and coordinateencoding. Categorical advantage was obvious in coordinate encoding. That is to say, coordinate encoding based on categorical encoding.2. Coodinate representation did not affect the categorical spatial relations, neithercoordinate spatial relations ddi. The results demonstrated that coordinate encoding focusedon partly processing, and coordinate spatial relations is more independent andanti-disturbed.3. Prime stimuli with both categorical and coordinate representation affected thecategorical and coordinate spatial relations.
