The basic contradiction of modernity is composed of cultural modernity and socialmodernity. Cultural modernity, as a very important part of modernity, was given a lot ofprecious points by many theorists. And Eagleton was just one of those theorists.Eagleton’s theory on cultural modernity is composed of two parts which seemindependent but have mutual connection. On one side, Eagleton thought that the modernsociety was facing the cultural crisis because of the unlimited expanding of cultural theories. So it’s necessary to push back the culture to its original position and form a joint culture toresolve the crisis; On the other side, through criticizing post modernism, Eagleton establishedhis insistence on modernity. He thought that post modernism had made a mistake called“precocity” for putting the future in front of the modern times subjectively and we must trustmodernity, insist on modernity because many important political problems of the modernsociety still need the theoretical guide of modernity. That’s how Eagleton showed us culture and modernity from a special perspective. Hethought that we must find a way out of this sick society through the help of culturalmodernity.
