Xinhua Dictionary is published after the founding of new China.It’s the first one thatexplains the meaning with groundless talk, gives an example using groundless talk. Itscapacity is small, but the effect is far-reaching. It has experienced the ups and downs nearly60years since the first edition was published in1953, made an important contribution to thepopularization of universal culture and knowledge, and records the change of languagedevelopment, witnessed the China’s changing times and China’s economic development. Thethesis highly focused on the differences of the two editions of the dictionary through thecomparative analysis of the10th edition11th edition of the Xinhua Dictionary.The thesisincludes the following aspects: the amendment of the glyph, the increase or decrease of theprefix, phonetic differences, the amendment of examples, and the problem of theinterpretation.The revision of the glyph, mainly reflected in the additions and deletions in thetraditional Chinese characters, the variant forms, which has increased by1500traditionalChinese characters, has increased by more than200variant forms, and not deleted thetraditional Chinese characters.But the variant forms are deleted besides the arrange form ofthe first batches of variant forms, and most are listed as traditional characters. The change ofthe word mainly reflects in ancient Chinese words, personal name, place names and surnameswords, dialect words, variant forms, etc. The phonetic alteration, deletes the pronunciationwhich is not common and rigorous, some words has added new pronunciation. Interpretationof the change is mainly reflected in changes of word’s meaning items and changes of ameaning item of the word. In addition the examples, mainly reflect in the additions anddeletions of the vocabulary, and replace the examples, as well as the changes of theinterpretation of the examples.We analyze and research quantitatively the five parts by the cause, content, quantity, etc.Thereby, it can provide the certain basis in order to invest and discuss the collecting wordsprinciple of the dictionary compilation, the semantic development and evolution.
