The tradition of realism has a long history in Hong Kong cinema. Actor Ann Hui havelong represented this aspect of Hong Kong cinema.Ann Hui is one of Hong Kong’s most outstanding directors. With her1979breakthrough film "The Secret", she went from directing television series to directingmovies and eventually became on of the symbolic figures of Hong Kong’s successful filmindustry. In1982at the second Hong Kong film awards, she was awarded "Best Pictures" aswell as "Best Director" for her film "Boat People". She would go on to amass a total of3"Best Director" awards. At the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, she was also awarded "BestDirector" awards. She is a prolific director in the Hong Kong’s new wave of film directing.Her movies provoke deep and profound feelings in the audience. Ann Hui’s films contain avariety of subject matter including topics about the state, politics, social problems, ethics,and treatment of the disadvantaged. Although her films cover many subjects, her traditionalmethod of filming still continues to the present.This paper analyzes Ann hue’s24movies as the background of Hong Kong’s new waveof film and will summarize the characteristics of her realistic style and her contributions tothe Hong Kong movie industry.
