This thesis adopts Lewis Carroll’s novel “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland” in1865and linguist Zhao Yuanren’s version in2001as language materials. It exploresregister deviation in Zhao’s version from the perspective of Functional linguistics. It proposes qualitative analysis, and attempts to solve two problems: First, whichtypes of register deviation exist in linguist’s Zhao’s version of “Alice’s Adventure inWonderland”? Second, what’s the influence of register deviation upon the translationquality of the Chinese version? By means of the thorough analysis of registerdeviation in Chinese version and the attempt of finding out the influence of registerdeviation upon the translation quality as well as the reasons for and effects ofregister deviation. And the findings are listed as followed: Field deviation, tenordeviation and mode deviation exist in the Chinese version. And they are realized inits associated ideational, interpersonal and textual deviation. Second, the influence ofregister deviation upon the translation quality of Chinese versions fall into twosubcategories—positive deviation and negative deviation. Positive deviation createshumorous effects, suits for the textual meaning, cultural background of targetlanguage as well as the role relationship of participants. In contrary, negativedeviation alters ideational, interpersonal meaning and misuses the characteristics ofchannel communication which leads to the intelligibility of the text. In a brief, register deviation in the Chinese version has positive influence upon the translationquality in the mass. And the significance of the study is valuable. From the macro level, it offers us anew possibility of studying register deviation theory. And at the same times, itsupplies us with a new field for the research of the novel “Alice’s Adventure inWonderland” and its translation. From the micro level, it solves the two questions of this research.
