As we all know, the Chinese classical poetry is a bright pearl in traditionalChinese culture. The beauty of color images in Chinese classical poetry has alwaysbeen the research focus for many scholars since ancient time. Intertwined with thepoet’s subjective feeling, with profound and rich connotations, color imagery is thecentral category of classical Chinese aesthetics. Color images and metaphors sharelots of similarities from cognitive perspective. In this sense, color image is aconceptual metaphor to a certain extent. As an indispensable rhetorical device in poetry, metaphor is frequently used notonly to stimulate the reader to think and imagine, but also to provoke a wide range ofemotions. In stylistic, metaphor is also an important approach to achieve“defamiliarization” and “imagery”. The poetic function of metaphor plays a veryimportant role in the interpretation of poems. With the participation of metaphoricalred image in the presentation of poetic artistic conception, poetry is endowed withspecial spirit and beauty as well. Red images are selected as corpus in this thesis. In the1960s, Reception Aesthetics, a reader-centered theory, was proposed byConstance School with Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser as main representatives. This theory has a close relationship with hermeneutics and can be seen as a literarycriticism. With its totally new perspective, reception aesthetics theory has exerted agreat influence on the whole literature field and literary translation field as well. Theauthor attempts to find a new way to enjoy the red images in Chinese classical poetryfrom the aesthetic perspective. As typical emotional symbols, red images is a common color phenomenon inChinese classical poetry. According to Reception Aesthetics, the meaning of redimages is purposefully uncertain, and blanks or gaps will be generated in the text, thereader, as the recipient of the source text, plays an active and creative role in fillingthe blanks and the realization of the gap. Basing on precious horizon of expectationand following the principle of aesthetic distance, readers can be more enjoyable of thefuzzy beauty of poetry better and enrich the connotations of red images by metaphorical thinking pattern, as a result, to derive the most aesthetic pleasure fromthe reading experience. The thesis explores the metaphorical fuzzy beauty of red images in classicalChinese poetry from the perspective of reception aesthetics. The uncertainty of redimages brought by the fuzzy language leaves large imagination space for the readers, which greatly excites and modifies their horizon of expectation. The task for thereader is to explore how red images convey the poetic artistic conception, the implicitbeauty, the empathy beauty and the author’s subjective feeling. It is expected that thisthesis can provide a brand-new perspective for readers to fully appreciate red imagesin Chinese classical poetry.
