Strategies For Representing Fuzzy Beauty Of Classical Chinese Poetry In English

The classical Chinese poetry (CCP) is one of the most significant achievements in Chinese literature, as well as in the literature of the world. Fuzziness refers to the uncertainty of one's recognition in defining the boundary and shape of an object or a conception. Fuzziness is also a kind of beauty; with it things are truer and more attractive. Human is an unreliable animal and the superficial beauty of his appearance can't endure for centuries. Therefore, the application of fuzzy language is the best choice in literature creation. CCP lays its foundation on the classical Chinese character which is featured by its deep connotation. In the classical Chinese poetry, because the poets aim at either the latent and reserved sentiment or the vast artistic conception, the obscure and thought-provoking fuzzy beauty is thus created, whose art achievement is difficult to reach for both our offspring and westerners. Fuzzy beauty is a remarkable and lasting feature of CCP.It is the fuzzy beauty that adds much difficulty to poetry translation; by far poetry translation has already been regarded as the most difficult in literature translation. In Chinese-English poetry translation many points of view, such as "three-beauty standards", "The aesthetic value" and "the images representing method" were put forward. But what's more important is translators' knowledge of the connotation, characteristics and culture of CCP, so as to bridge the gaps between China and western countries, contribute to a faithful version featured by fuzzy beauty. So, in this dissertation the author puts fuzzy beauty representation as research content.This thesis focusing on the fuzzy beauty gives an analysis of its definition, characteristics, source and classifications, finds the factors which affect translating the fuzzy beauty and provides the strategies for representing fuzzy beauty of CCP in English. After analyzing the related problems during the translation, we come to the realization that there are many factors affecting the classical Chinese poetry translation. First are the cultural factors. It is necessary to have a broad knowledge of classical Chinese poetry which includes that of the features of the Chinese character, metaphors and allusions, to reduce cultural difference. Second are the historic factors which fall into 3 categories:natural environment knowledge, historical situation and the poetry creating background and chance. And third are the aesthetic factors, which are in the light of Characteristics of fuzzy beauty.Next it gives the strategies for CCP-English translation. The treatments of fuzzy beauty in CCP can fall into four categories:from fuzziness to preciseness, from fuzziness to fuzziness, from preciseness to fuzziness and from preciseness to preciseness. The thesis provides some principles for CCP-English translation.
