Diplomatic interpretation is an important link in our country’s internationalcommunication. The current thesis attempts to use the Theory of Adaptation toCommunicative Context to guide the interpretation of diplomatic language withChinese characteristics(DLCC)so as to realize the communication goal and ensurethe accurate and effective delivery of China’s unique voice to the outside world. The methodology of the thesis is random inspection, by summarizing personaland other people’s interpreting experience. Examples in this thesis are from personalinterpreting practice including guide interpretation, banquet interpretation, conference interpretation, information interpretation (The author once hadinternships in Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries;the Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Chongqing; the Charhar Institute)as well as analysis and reference of diplomatic interpreting videos anddocuments(such as the videos of premier press conferences; the record of MikeWallace’s Interview with Deng Xiaoping). These examples stand out as diplomaticlanguage with Chinese characteristics that I find difficult to transform directly intoEnglish. All the interpretation was required to be in consecutive form. The thesis comprises of five chapters.Chapter1is the introduction. Chapter2is a review of the features of diplomaticlanguage with Chinese characteristics (DLCC), the difficulties of its interpretation.Chapter3discusses Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, which is the theoreticalframework of this thesis. Chapter4forms the main part of the whole study. Itanalyzes how DLCC adapts to communicative context with some real examples.Chapter5lists the necessary quality of diplomatic interpreter and the preparation foran interpreting assignment. And chapter6is the conclusion. In this thesis, diplomatic interpretation has been studied from a new pragmaticperspective, which may provide a new angle for diplomatic interpretation especiallyduring China’s efforts to establish its Chinese discourse system. Of course, while thestudy of diplomatic language with Chinese characteristics is based on AdaptationTheory, there are still several problems left for further study.
