A Report On Interpreting Practice In A Business Interview

This report elaborates how the author prepares,proceeds and reviews a business interview interpreting within the framework of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory(1999)to testify its interpretation power.With the economic globalization,reform and opening up and entry into WTO,China's economy is going global.China is an important destination for foreign investors to do business.The first step of their investment is to know China and Chinese people.Thus,interpreters play an important role in mutual understanding.However,to speak foreign language is not enough for them;to know cultural differences and business things are more necessary.The big challenge is that when they confront difficulties during the communication,they have to depend on themselves.The author was recommended as an interview interpreter for GZ Timely Enterprise Service Ltd.and its customer,Mr.Nidal.This report intends to study how she dealt with the difficulties in this interpreting.This report attempts to use Verschueren's ideas to analyze the author's performance in the interpretation.Before the interview,she collected the information related to this interview and made full preparation for it,but she still found it was hard for her to deal with unexpected things,the interviewee's the accent,illogical information,long segment and unfamiliar terminologies.Then after reading Understanding Pragmatics,she discovers Verschueren's viewpoints,which provide a new perspective for interpreting.Therefore,she uses it to evaluate her interpreting performance.Through theoretic deduction and example analysis,this paper analyzes the author's ways of dealing with all the difficulties she encountered in the interpreting.In business interview interpreting,she turns to the framework of Adaptation Theory for insights,i.e.contextual correlates of adaptability,linguistic correlates of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and pragmatic awareness of the adaptation process.She also reviews and summarizes it based on the audience's feedbacks.Apart from that,she transcripts the interpreting for further study and improvement.Little is approached about business interview interpreting studies.This report intends to testify the interpretation power of Adaptation Theory based on the author's interpreting performance.Through a thorough analysis of her work,the author learns more to do a better interpreting in a given situation.In conclusion,this report is essential to the author in terms of her academic research and interpreting practice.It is hoped that this paper would be a help to the future interpreters.
