From the1970s to now, the name Pan Hong has incessantly been appearing on thescreens in China, and she has become the mark and symbol in show business to someextent. The spirit of her devoting to work has earned respect from audience and media,and also won the honor of “excellence in both performing skills and moral integrity asevergreen tree”,“the Queen of Tragedy”,“the first to win Gold Rooster Award” inhistory, and so on. Pan Hong’s performance contains characteristics of rich expressionand enormous tension. Her acting career is closely bound up with China’s society andcultures, and in some degree her performance could be symbolized as the female imageof certain period in China.This paper starts with the classical characters shaped in various types of moviesand in different periods, and deeply explores the growth and transformation on the wayof her performance so as to reveal the factors leading to Pan Hong’s success. Meanwhile,by studying the performance of Pan Hong, the relationship between Pan Hong’s actingtransformation and China’s film industrialization is also to be dug into.Pan Hong is the second to none actress on screens from the Reform and opening uppolicy in China. She has molded many unforgettable roles such as Lu Wenting, Li Tong,Wan Rong and so on. Each of the roles is placed deeply into people’s mind, and PanHong has gained a lot from them. The honor “Beauty of Tragedy”is the affirmation ofher performance. While at the same she is marked as an instinctive actor. Through thecreation of the film Shanghai Fever, Pan Hong broke down the traditional opinions ofher image as an instinctive actor and broke through her own personality barrier. Thenshe made a huge change of the acting way and created many roles with distinctivepersonalities. This paper combines China’s film development to analyze the aboveprocess and factors. The performance of Pan Hong and her unique performance styletransformation experiences are studied and a thorough analysis has been made on thefilm actors’s transformation during the period of China’s film reformation. Alongitudinal research has been made on Pan Hong’s acting experiences and thematuration process of her performance, and a cross-sectional study is conducted on the effects of film reformation on actors’s transformation. Meanwhile, the significance ofinstinctive and personal performance in film performance are also explored in thispaper.
