In1990, the presentation of the TV series Desire set off the first wave of urban family series.After that, a number of TV series reflecting household affaires showed a strong rising momentum.Since the new century, especially after the screen purification, such series reflecting the urban familylife became the main force of the TV market.As an art form bearing certain cultural connotations, urban family series are always reflecting thenew social situation and phenomenon in a specific period. Since the1990s, with the acceleration ofurbanization, more and more rural people came to the urban areas which makes the traditionalurban-rural relationship become subtle, showing a new picture. In the context of urbanization, therewere also TV series reflecting the social phenomena of the rural people coming to the urban areasappearing on the TV screen. This thesis takes the TV series from the perspective of the urban andrural narrative as objects and focuses on the discussion of the dilemma brought by the integration ofthe rural people into the cities.This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction of the researchbackground and research methods. Chapter two first discriminates the category of urban family series,and then discusses the emergence and development of urban and rural narrative in urban family series.In Chapter three, based on the theory of the Other, the thesis analyzes the behaviour of the phoenixmen and phoenix women in urban family series and their family members, as well as the live-incaregivers from the rural areas as the Other, exploring the dilemma the rural people undergo as theother under different cultural language environments. In Chapter four, the thesis is focused on thetopic of identification, exploring in depth the anxiety of the rural people in the cities of being doubleOther, between the gap and the third space status. Chapter five focuses on the unavoidable dilemma ofthe rural people’s identification caused by urban people’s vision, heterogeneous space andself-realization of the rural people and other reasons. The epilogue analyzes the TV series in depthbased on urban and rural narrative in the urban family series so as to reveal the social meaning andcultural value of the urban and rural narrative in urban family series.
