From the beginning of the17th century, Viola become one part of the western orchestra.By the18th century, the Austria composer Haydn developed string quartets, viola graduallyestablished the important position in the chamber music, but until the20th century the workswritten for viola solo are very few. Because of viola·s unique music performance, especially itplayed with the magnetic and mysterious voice quality and wide heavy range, it began to getthe favour of the composers and performers· attention. Therefore, there appeared a lot ofperforming forms like viola solo, chamber music and contemporary music on the internationalscene, thus it became popular that composers wrote viola solo works for the specific violist.Gy rgy Ligeti·s sonata for viola solo was one of these works.Gy rgy Ligeti was a Hungarian composer, one of the classical music avant-garde, alsothe most important musician as well as Bartok in Hungary. This sonata for viola solo hecomposed was listed as one of the most difficult sonatas in viola works,also occupied animportant position in the history of viola.This sonata for viola solo was for Tabea Zimmermann, the international famousGermany violist. Two movements of the sonata was premiered by Zimmermann, the othermovements were premiered by different violists. When Zimmermann watched the manuscriptshe said this was the hardest viola sonata she had ever seen.
