With the global trend of economic integration, China has a lot of cooperation withvarious countries, regions and organizations. Under this circumstance, consecutiveinterpreting, as a special way of communication and cross-culture activity, has gainedmore and more people’s attention. On the basis of the study of redundancy, the authortries to find out how to analyze the redundancy occurred in the interpreting process asthe consecutive interpreter, to help the audience better understand the informationconveyed by the speaker, thus the interpreting quality can be guaranteed and a bettercommunication can be achieved. As a translation activity, consecutive interpreting, in which the interpreter willnormally sit at the table and listen to the speaker while taking notes, the interpreterhas to do the translation after the pause of the speaker, and he can reorganize theinformation according to the notes. More importantly, consecutive interpreting is aspecial way of communication, as the interpreter, he should first understand what thespeaker intends to convey, and then interpret the information to the audience. Duringthe interpreting process, the communication doses not only occur between theinterpreter and the speaker, but also occur between the interpreter and the audience. Inorder to smoothes the communication, redundancy will always occur during theprocess of conveying message from the speaker to the interpreter, as well asinterpreting the information from the interpreter to the audience. Therefore, in order toanalyze the redundancy in consecutive interpreting, the omission strategy and theaddition strategy should be concluded.According to the classification of the redundancy as well as the function, theauthor proposed two fundamental ways that can be applied to deal with theredundancy occurred in the interpreting process, one is the strategy of omission andthe other one is the strategy of addition. As is known to all, English and Chinese aretwo different languages in terms of phoneme, syntax, culture and things on thesemantic level. The interpreter should apply these strategies properly judging from thecontext. This calls for the interpreter to firstly have a good mastery of the redundancyand then utilize the strategy of omission and the strategy of addition properly andflexibly, which will exert a huge influence on the final interpreting quality. This report is on the interpreting on the nuclear popular science. It is made up offive parts: First part is task description; Second, process description; Third, the theoryof redundancy; Fourth, the solution as well as the case analysis; Fifth, conclusion.Based on a self-assessment of the consecutive interpreting performance for thepublic service unit and an analysis of the recorded transcription, the author studies theredundancy that is frequently occurred in the interpreting, including phonemicredundancy; syntactic redundancy; semantic redundancy and cultural or backgroundredundancy. The author also analyzed her cases to summarize some strategies that canbe applied in the interpreting, they are the strategy of omission and the strategy ofaddition. The author hopes that this report can help other interpreters betterunderstand and apply these strategies in the interpreting and can offer some referencesfor interpreters.
