Papers included in Science Citation Index(SCI)journals are an important way of international exchange in various fields. They also serve as a significant indicator for evaluating the science research of a country.Safety engineering is a first-class discipline of China University of Mining and Technology(CUMT).Plenty of safety science papers are submitted to SCI journals every year. However, translations of these papers vary in quality, which influences the inclusion. In the papers rejected by SCI journals,over-redundancy and long sentences are two prominent problems. Therefore, studies were conducted on redundancy in two SCI papers from the same author.Redundancy is an important concept in the Information Theory. As a phenomenon of language, redundancy exists at all levels. It interprets the meaning of a message, functions as a kind of rhetoric device and ensures grammatical accuracy. Therefore, redundancy should be appropriately added or omitted during the translation to maintain redundancy equivalence.Papers on safety engineering are scientific texts which feature conciseness and rigorousness, with many non-subject sentences and non-verbal expressions.Generally, the information load of a source text is consistent with the channel capacity of source language(SL)readers. However, due to differences between English and Chinese, target language(TL)readers' decoding ability falls to some extent, which calls for an adjustment of redundancy.Since safety science papers are academic and professional, translators who lack relevant knowledge usually lighten the information load by adding redundancy, which, however, leads to lengthy translations. Therefore, this report divides the redundancy that can be omitted in safety science papers into three types, namely explicit repetition, implicit repetition and category words under the guidance of the Information Theory. Then, two translation methods, omission and blending, are proposed for different kinds of redundancy, which provides a reference for the translation of safety science papers.
