The use of conjunctions as the cohesive way in a text between Chinese andEnglish is different. The study of this is conducive to language learning andtranslation. With the guiding of the cohesion theory and cultural linguistic theory, thispaper would take the Chinese-English version of “A Dream of Red Mansions” whichis translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang as the corpus and compare theconjunctions as the cohesive ways in verse and prose of the book. The numbers ofconjunctions used as cohesive devices in Chinese are less than in English. And inEnglish translation version, the numbers of conjunctions in additive and adversativerelation are more than causal and temporal relation. These phenomena can be drawnfrom the comparison of Chinese and Western cultures. This paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the introductions, describing the origin of the topic, literaturereview, research significance and value, research methods and innovations. The second chapter is a brief of cohesion theory and the five ways of cohesion. The third chapter is the comparison of conjunctions as the cohesive devices inverse and prose between the original text and English translation of “A Dream of RedMansion”.The forth chapter is the comparison of the characteristics of Chinese and Englishlanguage and Chinese and western culture which explain the language phenomenon. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.
