A Comparison On The Quality Of English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpretation With And Without Corresponding Text

The empirical study compares SI quality with and without text on fidelity, language and delivery, and explores reasons behind the differences. The study result is in line with the hypothesis:the overall performance of SI with text is better than that of SI without text, especially in fidelity. However, SI without text tends to produce better language and delivery.The thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter introduces the definition of SI with or without text as well as the methodology, purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter, i.e., literature review, reviews studies on SI with and without text at home and abroad and studies on interpreting quality evaluation. In the third chapter, Daniel Gile’s Effort Model is applied to explain the respective models in SI with and without text.The fourth chapter describes the empirical study from the perspective of experiment design, assessment and material selection, etc. The fifth chapter shows experiment data in the form of histograms and compares quality of SI with and without text in regards of overall performance, fidelity and language and delivery. Then, the author elaborates on the reasons behind the differences based on the effort model,and proposes suggestions for SI training and SI practitioners. The sixth chapter includes the conclusion of the study and the limitation of the experiment.
