The thesis digs into a deep analysis on cultural elements conditioning inproverb translation, posing the relationship between proverbs and culture by thecomparison of cultural similarities and disparities shown in English and Chineseproverbs. Then it calls for the significance of cross-cultural awareness andculture-oriented translation. The thesis proceeds with a brief review on studies as to domestication and foreignand provides abundant examples to illustrate how cultural factors behind proverbsinfluence the choice of translation strategies. Domestication, atarget-language-oriented strategy, tends to achieve the naturalness and smoothness ofthe target language; while foreign, based on source culture, focuses on faithfulnessand aims to introduce the readers about a foreign culture. This thesis focuses on the choice between two translationstrategies—domestication and foreign in dealing with cultural elements in thetranslation of proverbs from the perspective of culture. Therefore,“foreign over domestication” is proposed in this thesis. The purpose is just to draw more attention to foreign translation, which mustbecome increasingly important against the background of globalization and culturalcommunication.
