Guided by the international communication of Chinese culture, a very important nationalpolicy, an increasing number of works introducing Chinese culture and Chinese regionalculture have been translated into foreign languages. The translation material of this project ispart of Savouring Local Zhejiang, a bilingual reader, and the project is a result of the endeavorin the international communication of Zhejiang regional culture. Provided by the supervisor, the material translated by the author includes Chapters Two, Three, Four, and Fifteen.Chapters Two, Three and Four are to be discussed in the report. The report concerns both translation theory and translation practice. The source textintroduces Zhejiang culture and customs in a comprehensive and detailed way, which ischaracterized by a large number of Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions. How totranslate these words and expressions was a big challenge for the translator. The translator didsome theoretical preparations before the actual translating: researching the definition andtranslation methods of culture-loaded words and expressions, then applying such theoreticalknowledge to translation practice. This report recounts how some of the culture-loaded wordsand expressions in the project were processed in the actual translation. It includes thefollowing four parts:The first part is a task description. It mainly talks about the project’s social background, task background and text description. The second is a process description, including taskassignments, pre-translation and in-translation processes. The third is a case analysis. Itexplains in detail how the culture-loaded words and expressions were addressed in thetranslation practice. The fourth part is conclusion in which the translator shares her gainingsand losses and reflects on how the translation defects might be remedied and translationquality might be improved. The contributions of this translation project lie in: The text chosen deals with localZhejiang culture, of which previous translation and translation research have scarcely beenfound; in the actual translating process, the translator fundamentally grasped the importantcultural connotations of the culture-loaded words and expressions, especially thosespecifically concerning local Zhejiang culture; the translation was done under the guide of theprinciple of international communication of Chinese culture. The translator hopes the projectcan provide reference for future translation of similar texts.
