Culture-loaded Words And Expressions In Fortress Besieged And Their Translation

Accompanied by the rapid development of cultural exchanges, translating culture-loaded words and expressions faithfully is becoming more and more important because it can help to introduce Chinese culture to English readers and promote cross-cultural exchanges. The frequent use of Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions has constituted one of the major features of Qian Zhongshu's Fortress Besieged or Wei Cheng ( 《围城》 ). These Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions are the direct reflections of the unique features of Chinese culture. However, they are one of the most difficult points and major barriers in the cross-cultural communication and Chinese-English (C-E) translation. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the important issue which is concerned by translators.From a cross-cultural perspective, the paper studies the relationship between language, culture and translation. It puts forward that culture is closely related to language. On the one hand, language reflects cultural difference. On the other hand, cultural difference directly affects language communication. Translation is an important device in cross-cultural communication. It is not only a linguistic transformation but also a cultural transfer. Because of the special living surroundings, religious beliefs, traditional customs, ways of life, value systems, conception of beauty, etc., each ethnic group has deposited its unique features of culture through long historical development.
