On The Translation Of Religious Culture-Loaded Words And Expressions In Strange Tales From Make-Do Studio

The frequent use of Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions, especially the use of religious culture-loaded words and expressions related to Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and ghost culture, has constituted one of the major features of Pu Songling's Strange Tales from Make-Do Studio. ( 《聊斋志异》 ) These Chinese culture-loaded words and expressions are the direct reflections of the unique features of Chinese religious culture. However, they are one of the most difficult points and major barriers in the cross-cultural communication and Chinese-English translation. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the religious culture-loaded words and expressions and their translation.From a cross-cultural perspective, this thesis studies the relationship between language, culture and translation. It puts forward that culture is closely related to language. On the one hand, language reflects cultural differences. On the other hand, culture differences directly affect language communication. Translation is an important device in the cross-cultural communication. It is not only a linguistic transformation but also a cultural transfer. Because of the special living surroundings, religious beliefs, traditional customs, ways of life, value systems, conception of beauty, etc., each ethnic group has deposited its unique features of culture through long historical development. These unique features of culture are conveyed and reflected by culture-loaded words and expressions. Meanwhile, the thesis holds that foreignization and domestication are the two important translation strategies toward translating culture-loaded words and expressions. The former can effectively promote cultural exchanges while the latter serves as the necessity in translation. They are contradictory in surface but supplementary in essence.
