The thesis studies how to consider readers in the translation of red tourism publicity texts(here after called RTPTs). Red Tourism is a new form of tourism for it is a combination ofrevolutionary spirit and the modern tourism form. Because of its special culturalconnotation and historical background, Red Tourism is widely accepted by the Chinesepeople; moreover, a great many foreign visitors are also attracted to pay trips to thesetourist attractions. In this sense, the translation of red tourism publicity texts plays anessential role in prompting the Chinese tourism industry and international exchange. However, so far there are still few scholars doing researches on this kind of translation, problems such as mistranslation and scattering can be found everywhere, which harms thepublicity greatly. Today, the major researchers on this area are Wu Cui (2009), WangXiaoxi (2009) and Xiao Qun (2010). And most of them study the translation of red tourismpublicity texts from the perspective of functionalist theory and skopos theory, making thestudies too superficial to guide the real translating practice. As it known to us all, the aimof tourism translation is to attract the foreign visitors through expressing effectiveinformation about the tourist attractions, thus the success of the translation depends on theacceptation of readers. Therefore, the Reception Aesthetics is proposed to guide itstranslation.Reception Aesthetics is reader aesthetics for it focuses on the subjectivity of readers. This theory holds that readers aren’t passive acceptors in the reading process; instead, theyare active creators for the choosing of texts is decided by their expectation of horizon, andthe gaps and indeterminacies in the texts are also concretized or rebuilt by them. Guided bythe Reception Aesthetics, this thesis mainly deals with the following problems: (1) What are the language features of RTPTs?(2) How should the translator do in considering TL readers in the C-E translation ofRTPTs?(3) What translating strategy should be used in C-E translation of RTPTs?Through a lot of analysis, it is found that:(1) The RTPTs is a special vocative text. As a vocative text, its top task is to attractreaders. However, due to the special social and historical background of these areas, theirtranslation is no easy job for the special language features like rich cultural connotation, highly political and narrative. In this case, translating strategies like annotation andaddition can be selected to offer necessary information.(2) As the main readers are foreign tourists, it is advised that the translator shouldknow well the differences and similarities of the two languages in the translating process. What’s more, more attention should be paid to aspects like cognitive and aestheticdifferences. Here translating strategies such as free translation and restructuring of theoriginal texts are proposed in the translating process.(3) For the special text and function, the C-E translation of RTPTs includesprocedures like providing social and historical background, understanding readers andselecting proper translating strategies. Based on these procedures, TL reader-orientedtranslating procedures can be formed, and some translating strategies concerning TLreaders can also be derived by analyzing the RTPTs with the help of the TLreader-oriented translating procedures.
