With the rising of comprehensive power and status of China in the world, there hasemerged “both China and Chinese Heat” in many countries. Increasing number offoreigners start to learn Chinese and more and more come to China studying Chineseand tasting Chinese culture face to face. During the process of studying Chinese, wordsare important and difficult to learn.This paper chooses17Brazilian students studying in Chongqing University as theresearch objects, using the methods of questionnaire survey which is the main method,literature review, classroom observation, personal interview. Questionnaire surveyincludes vocabulary testing and studying motive and methods survey. In vocabularytesting, words are classified by their characteristics and word-building methods andthe data is analyzed with R software and heatmap function; in the part of studyingmotive and methods survey, combining with the results of vocabulary testing, thecorrelation analysis between the testing result and the factors that attach influence to thestudents’ words studying is carried on.Students’ vocabulary testing results accord with their real situation which reflectsthat most of them are doing well while some others need to catch up.In terms of lexical category, the result of verbs is better than that of adjectiveswhich is better than that of nouns. Furthermore, those words that students always use intheir daily life are acquired better than those students learn in class and don’t apply afterclass.With regard to the method of word-building, verb compounding of verb-object ismost difficult. And as a whole, the method of word-building attaches little influence onthe acquisition of students’ words’ learning.Excellent students are accomplished in using various methods of words studying.While inferior students are adept at basic methods instead of advanced skills. Theintermediate students are in a middle state of using all the methods.As for adult Brazilian students, there exist both extrinsic and intrinsic motivationwhich is much more important in acquiring Chinese words. Students don’t grant good satisfaction to class teaching about Chinese wordslearning. Most students want teachers to teach more words’ meaning, application andgive more chances to do exercises.
