Zhang Xijie, Shandong Licheng, a “Xiucai” in the Kang-Qian Period.He startedreading and studying at an early age to take part in the imperial examination, but failedeverytime, so he lived with teaching or being Aides and reduced to a person of bottom ofthe society. But he insisted on poetry writing, never stopped, nearly1,900poems haveconserved. By the research of Zhang Xijie and his poems, we can learn more knowledgeand understanding about the lower intellectuals and their literature, but also do some favorabout the research and disseminate of the local intellectuals and documents. Zhang Xijielived in the flourishing age of Kangxi and Qianlong, a stable social environment and itswell-off families create a good condition for his study. But the imperial examination was socruel that depressed his inner passion; he turned to poetry, wine and nature. The content ofZhang Xijie’s poems is wide, includes quiet, sentimental, said pregnant, travel andentertainment, relate to various aspects of his life, reflecting his depression and complaintfor the fail of imperial examination, his loneliness for heat heart to cold world, his pleasurefor focusing on the natural landscape, his pursuit of the good quality and the noblesentiments, his enthusiasm and sincere feeling to others. The features of his poems are alsoclear, despite the themes and styles are various, even some bizarre, but all have true nature.He not only made the description as his basic method of writing, but also regarded essay aspoem. The language is so plain that can show the effect of harmony between refined andpopular words, it’s intriguing.
