Note-taking plays an important role in consecutive interpreting. Few interpreterscan interpret comprehensively and accurately without referring to the notes.Note-taking is an important tool for extending the time of memory and refining thecontent of memory, so good note-taking can enhance the quality of interpretinggreatly. The goal of interpreting teaching is to cultivate qualified interpreters. As animportant capacity that qualified interpreters must master, note-taking has been anindispensable part of consecutive interpreting teaching.This experiment was carried out among10freshmen of MTI major with threesimulative interpreting tasks and one survey after the tasks. Video materials and thenotes taken by that students during the experiment were collected. According to thevideo materials, students’ interpretation was transcribed, and the student interpreters’were divided into two groups: group with higher score and group with lower scoreaccording to the transcription. By comparing the notes of the two groups, the writergot student interpreters note-taking difficulties in Chinese-English consecutiveinterpreting.After qualitative and qualitative analysis about the experiment data, it is foundthat there are some difficulties for note-taking skills like the choice of language, theform, the content and the structure of the note-taking, and cognition difficulties suchas relying too much in notes, difficulties in recognizing information and reproduction.Based on the student interpreters’ note-taking difficulties in Chinese-Englishconsecutive interpreting, suggestions of note-taking teaching principles likeemphasizing on remembering by brain,encouraging students to form their own styleof keeping notes as well as teaching contents should include source languagecomprehension exercises and listening and speaking exercises and so on.
