Under the influence of new theory and practice, the documentary film is no longer a simplereflection of historical reality. Based on the traditional realism, the addition of a more trivial anddiversified expressive way will not destruct reality of the documentary film, but also add the visualityof it and express the author’s subjective intention more effectively. The reasonable use of theexpressive way makes the creation of documentary films more personalized and shapes the uniqueand fresh image style so as to manifest more powerful arts vitality.This thesis attempts to define the concepts and arrange the system of the expressive way in thecreation of the documentary film mainly from three aspects of lens freestyle, scene construction andcompiled reorganization of materials in order to explore the way in which the expressive way is usedin the creation of documentary films. Among them, lens freestyle summarizes its form and meansfrom the perspective relationship, distance and subjective lens between the video camera and thesubject. Scene construction surrounds around visual element and auditory element for thecomprehensive analysis of each element in the expressive way. Compiled reorganization of materialsstarts from the picture language and commentary to explore the arts expressive way in which thecompilation technique is used to reorganize the materials on the basis of historic truth in theproduction phase of the documentary film.Besides, the author takes into consideration of the cases of excellent documentary films homeand abroad to make an analysis and seek a solution to existing problems so as to make a goodreference to the creation of documentary films in the future.
