| This thesis mainly focuses on commerce and culture of film art from eastern and western cultural context makes every effort to fully reveal the whole operation of Ang Lee’s works and the eastern and western cultural characteristics and its specialty of art which were hidden in his movies, sums up their international reference and revelation to the local Chinese movies. Through detailed study of specific works, the characteristics of their artistic and cultural creativity and the operation stood out; the author analyses the differences between eastern and western culture, then put the culture and technic, which is the two essential parts of modern film making, into specific argument and analysis of the academic research, hopes to find breaks and creation from research methods, theoretical perspectives and conclusion.Part1The introduction teases with main contents and development of Ang Lee and his films across-the-board. Give a brief presentation of the plot by combining Lee’s eastern and western life experiences with the screen plays and films he created during that time.Part2Further discussion about ethical culture from his movies. We can see it through the relationships between father and son/daughter, families and love. The relationship between father and son contains interdependency, but mutual repulsion as well, it’s complicated and difficult to unbind. From Father Trilogy and The Ice Storm, the author analyses multi-culture versus one’s own culture, modern culture versus traditional culture, and Chinese culture versus Western culture by using family as an entry point to discuss the family ties, the meaning of family culture, and some related questions. Investigate the connotation of homosexuality culture and the relationship between Lee and his works by studying The Wedding Banquet and Brokeback Mountain. And find out that the feminine consciousness was hidden in Lust.Part3Compare Chinese and Western culture through cultural consciousness integrally. Based on Lee’s personal experiences and some of his movies, like Pushing Hands and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the author observes the hidden spirit of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and how to create artistic conception by focusing on traditional Chinese culture. Lee’s a positive response to Hollywood commercial culture, using3D technology in his latest film Life of Pi, all these let the author to analyze how to deal with sense and sensibility, technique and art while pursuing a breakthrough on visual effects by using3D technology; and his works have a unique characteristic on looking at the inner humanity.Part4Discuss and testify the operation and its enlightenment of Lee’s films under Chinese and western cultural context. Analyze the reason why Lee made a success in film industry from the aspect of the audiences’aesthetic demand and the multicultural form which based on that. The success of Lee’s film, such as Life of Pi, at home and abroad, reflects two problems at the Chinese film industry, the culture default and nonstandard operation, which allow the author to deeply discuss what we can learn from this film art that Lee has created, use the multicultural context within to help fix the lack of cultural connotation of our commercial film. |
