This thesis is about to analyze some problems the translator encountered in translating thetourism promotion materials of some Central and South American countries. Except for someproper terms specific to a certain culture, the source text is not hard for the translator tounderstand. Unlike literary translation, there is no need to change the source text to suit thetaste of the target readers. The reason why the translator chose the functional equivalencetranslation theory is partially based on it. The basic requirement of functional equivalencetranslation theory is to let the target readers feel the same as the source readers do. And whenword-for-word translation is not possible, the translators can make appropriate adjustments toachieve functional equivalence. In doing all these, the author hopes to reproduce what thewriter wanted to convey.However, it is not an easy job to do. That’s why the translator wrote this thesis--toresearch on the proper translation methods of tourism promotion materials. This source textcontains both educational knowledge and interesting facts; therefore, to translate it is surly adifficult task, because moralizing texts usually tend to be boring. When people are readinginteresting materials, they will feel like going there for themselves. So during the translation,what mattered most to the author is the readers’ reaction. Functional equivalence enablestarget readers to grasp the essence of the source text, so in order to make the translated textboth readable and interesting, the translator made some changes in the materials. Thetranslator used some proper methods, like amplification, adaptation and added aestheticperceptions.This thesis consists of six parts--task description, research value, process description,text analysis, conclusion, and references.
