Nowadays, tourism industry has become an important growth point of China‘s national economy in the process of cultural and economic globalization. With the rapid development of tourism industry and the urgent need of realizing China Dream, the translation of Chinese tourism materials plays an important role in promoting tourism, spreading Chinese culture, enhancing Chinese cultural soft power and achieving the national strategy of ―culture-going-out‖. Though more and more scholars and translators are beginning to focus on the general Chinese-English translation process and problems of tourism materials, there is still abundant room for more research of tourism translations from different perspectives, especially from the perspective of a certain translation theory.Appeared in the 1970 s, the German Functional Translation Theory is so unique that it has established a close link to the translation of practical texts since its birth. Functional approaches pay more attention to text types and functions than ever before, which point out the way of tourism translation. The tourism materials with both informative and expressive function should not only be translated correctly but to be attractive and influential to the tourists‘ actions as well.As a case study of tourism translation in Mianyang, this thesis takes German Functional Translation Theories as the theoretical foundation. Under the enlightenment of functional approaches, the author attempts to analyze functions, text types and general skopos of tourism materials of most of scenic spots in Mianyang. And a detailed text analysis is made on such materials from the aspects of extratextual and intratextual factors. Then the author probes into typical translation errors in the C-E translation of the tourism materials‘ translation in Mianyang and discusses the causes and suggestions of the problems from the functional perspective. Finally, the differences between Chinese and English tourism texts are compared and some corresponding translation strategies and methods from three aspects, that is, the general translation methods, syntactic methods and genre conventions are explored for improving the translation quality, with the hope of promoting the overall development of tourism industry in Mianyang and even in China.
