Indonesia Mandarin textbooks have been one of the main academic researches ofthe teaching Chinese as a foreign language. During the six months of my internship inSurabaya, Indonesia, I collected Mandarin textbooks from23primary and secondaryschools,6Cram schools and2universities. Surabaya’s Mandarin textbooks aredivided into four categories: The first category is totally alien textbooks, for example,"HAN YU" and Singapore’s "Chinese Language for primary Schools". The secondcategory of textbooks is based on the alien textbooks and adapted, but not published, for example, Xin Zhong cram school’"HANYU JIAOCHENG". The third category’textbooks wrote and published after the reference of alien textbooks, Such as“YUMIAO HUAYU” and “QIANDAO HUAYU”. Based on this category, I havesimple analysis about Surabaya Mandarin textbooks. The fourth category was entirelywritten by the Indonesia local teachers, such as "Paket Bahasa Mandarin",“basicChinese”. Among, primary and secondary schools use multi-national textbooks,"HAN YU"," YUMIAO HUAYU" and " Chinese Language for primary Schools” gotthe highest utilization rate; cram schools are mainly used the Chinese textbooks andIndonesia textbooks; university basically use Chinese textbooks of teaching Chineseas a foreign language. The current textbook on Surabaya, the theory is adequate, the content hasdiversity, the textbooks are full of interesting materials, and the development ismature, but the alien textbooks don’t suit Surabaya. Most of students think these alientextbooks are boring, not practical. In Indonesia, the local Mandarin textbooks still areinexperienced, they lack of systematic and scientific guidance, so, it is difficult to seetheir local characteristics.
