Note-taking is an integral part of consecutive interpreting skills, so the quality ofnotes is closely related to the quality of interpreting performance. Many scholars andpractitioners have done research in this field and have presented valuable findings,among which commonly accepted principles on note-taking have been found. Thisresearch, based on the principles found by previous scholars, chooses the second-yearMI students of School of Translation Studies, Xi’an International Studies University asexperimental subjects, and probes note-taking problems of MI students withconsideration of their actual training and studying conditions. By way of experiment,the author collects the notes of MI students, compares them with the practitioner’snotes and analyzes the data so as to find out their typical problems, including lack oflogic links on notes, noting too much information, information loss, poor layout ofnotes, etc. Through analyzing and categorizing the problems and with reference to theprevious studies, the author summarizes the problems and reasons, namely inadequateinformation processing capacity, personal note-taking problem unestablished,inadequate background knowledge, and inappropriate effort division. With analysis ofthe problems and reasons, the author intends to help MI students solve the problemson note-taking, increase the quality of notes so as to eventually increase the quality ofinformation output.
