Foreign literature has been very popular in China. With diverse culturalperspectives and different thinking ways between eastern and western, the translationof English short stories plays an important role in the field of literature translation.This paper is a translation practice report. The original text24Hours with20chapters is written by Kay David, a famous romance and suspense novelist and shortstory writer in America, and it tells a romantic love story of two broken lovers. Theycome across in a bank, where a robbery happens. At last, they get an in-depthunderstanding of each other during their fighting with the robbers and regain theirsweet love. This report consists of five parts, i.e. introduction, translation taskdescription, translation process description, case analysis and summary.Based on the author’s translation practice, this translation report mainly focuseson two major aspects to analyze the text translation: translation of character dialoguesand translation of plot description, exploring the issues during the translation processto find the appropriate solutions. Two translation methods, literal translation and freetranslation, are adopted to translate dialogues between characters. Extension, syntacticlinearity, combination, reversion and other strategies are used in translatingdescriptive plots.The report shows that in order to translate foreign short stories, the translatormust be well equipped with good literary quality, and meanwhile with an accurateunderstanding of the original text and good Chinese language competence are alsovery important.
