Francis Poulenc, French composer and pianist who lived in early20th century, was a member of "Les Six". His three piano pieces Novelettes beard very thick colour of classicism. To combine his biography, circumstance in which he lived and historic background, this dissertation analyzed artistic characteristics of his three Novelettes and techniques related to these works. It briefed also the impacts upon Poulenc’s composition by social and political changes, development of philosophical and aesthetic ideas and rise of music schools at the time in Europe in general and in France in particular. Moreover, the author analyzes the structure, harmony, melody, styles of respective Novelettes and puts forward practical recommendations for interpretation. Meanwhile, in analysis of this group of operations, the author introduces personal views concerning musical aesthetics and musical education. The critical point of this dissertation is to make relatively objective comments on artistic values of Poulenc’s Novelettes in history of music and offered personal views related to understanding and master of different styles in respective works. Furthermore the analysis of structures and techniques in this dissertation will be valuable both in reference and practice in interpretation of his works.
