Magical Realism is a literary genre which appeared in Latin America in the1950s. Itsmain feature is to transform reality into fantasy without losing its truth. Magical Realismrevealed the magical reality in Latin America through the methods of symbol,exaggeration, and the circularity of time.After the Cultural Revolution, along with Marquez’ winning of the Nobel Prize inLiterature, Magical Realism began to spread throughout China quickly and caused a waveof learning. For Mo Yan and other writers who were struggling to find innovative writingstyle, Magic Realism pointed out the direction of Chinese literature. It had provideddeveloped model and successful literary expression methods for reference. Mo Yan hadgained the creative inspiration from Marquez’s novel. He actively absorbed advancedwriting concepts and methods from the Magical Realism and began to build his ownliterary Kingdom Northeast Gao Mi County.Mo Yan’s acceptance of Magical Realism was due to the influence of largeenvironment and his own factors. Both China and Latin America are developing countries.They have similar social and cultural backgrounds and mystical cultural traditions. YoungMo Yan was brought up in an environment which is full of folk tales. This experience hadnurtured his rich imagination. While absorbing advanced Western literature technology,MoYan insisted on focusing on the exploration of Chinese traditional culture and nationalspirit. Besides, he tried to reflect the vicissitudes of a family, a village or even a countrythrough the writing of family and town. These ideas coincided with Marquez who was therepresentative of magical realism writers.We can simply divide Mo Yan’s acceptance of Magical Realism into three stages: Theinitial imitation, the selective absorption and the final formation of Mo Yan’s writing style.After the initial imitation, Mo Yan decided to flee these two blast furnaces and open up hisown literature world. He picked up the narrative art of ancient Chinese art to explore anew literary writing style. After2000, the writing of Sandalwood Punishment marked theformation of distinctive Mo Yan Hallucinationary Realism. While learning from MagicalRealism, Mo Yan’s writing rooted in traditional Chinese culture and had an inheritanceand innovation. Mo Yan gave full play to his magical feeling advantage, combined illusionwith reality to build his Northeast Gao Mi County literary Kingdom.With the construction of Northeast Gao Mi County, Mo Yan showed people the vicissitudes of one family, one town, or even China for a historical period. In hisdescription of lifestyle and living conditions of hometown, he sublimated a kind ofexploring and pursues for one nation’s vitality. This writing style with universal humanspirit brought Mo Yan to the world literature stage. In2012, Mo Yan was awarded theNobel Prize in literature.The thesis can not only deepen our study on Mo Yan’s writing style and its formationprocess, but also has a certain reference value for China-foreign cultural exchanges.
