Idioms are frequently used way of expression in Chinese and Korean languages. Among them idioms associated with body parts, especially associated with hand and foot partstakes comparatively large proportion. It is because human actions and daily life primarily done with help of hands and foots. However, because of culture, way of life, way of thinking surely existing difference, the way idioms are expressed can also be different.In a recent decade, linguistic studies on Chinese and Korean languages idioms had obtained certain results already. However, if overviewing Chinese and Korean lan-guages idioms comparative studies, researches for the most part concentrates on struc-ture, semantic and pragmatic doing comparative analysis of idioms. But researches of idioms, especially associated with hand and foot parts, from cognition of metaphor point of view, is lacking till today, and results of such researches are very few.Concentrating on differences between forming mechanism of metaphor and meton-ymy in Chinese and Korean languages idioms, the object of this study is Chinese and Korean language idioms associated with "hand" and "foot". Referencing and using Lakoff and Johnson metaphor and metonymy theory, do a comparative analysis of idi-oms cognition mechanisms, to find its generation and comprehension differences and similarities.Thesis divided into four chapters, with following contents:Chapter1presents research objective and importance, Chinese and Korean lan-guages idioms current situation and methods of this research.Chapter2mainly introduces Lakoff and Johnson metaphor and metonymy theory.Chapter3presents Chinese and Korean languages idioms definitions and features, and differentiate and define involved in this study associated with hand and foot parts idioms.Chapter4and5references and uses Lakoff and Johnson metaphor and metonymy theory, conduct analysis from two large aspects. The first is Chinese and Korean "simi-lar source domain" idioms. This mainly includes "similar source and target domains id-ioms","similar source domain-different target domain idioms". The second is "differ- ent source domain" idioms. This part mostly includes "different source domain-similar target domain idioms","different source and target domains idioms". By means of this study, explore Chinese and Korean languages metaphors cognition mechanisms.At the end there is conclusion, it generalizes and summarizes preceding content.
