The debates on the Chinese translations of The Red and the Black and the survey towards their readers is a significant event in the history of translation of China. As a well-planned and well-organized event that covers a wide range, its significancy not only lies in what the participants have discussed, what weighs much more is the reflections that it has brought toBased on the event of The Red and the Black, our present work tends to make further researches on the problems concerning the translation criticism, analyze its significancies for the translation research. We try to get inspired from this event that we need someone to construct a translative event; the research of this event can lead us back to the translation, and in turn promote the development of the cause of translation. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first chapter is contributed to the general introduction of the three debates on the Chinese translations of The Red and the Black. As the first real translation criticism of China, we analyze in the second chapter the reflections and inspirations that this event can bring to us. We would like to make our research under the four aspects:the subject of the translation criticism, the translating subject, the basis of evaluation of a translation and the receiving subject. In the last chapter, we concentrate on the transplantation of a foreign work in the receiving language-culture. Under the horizon of the transplantation, we would like to point out the significancies of this event both in the translation practices and in the theoretical research.
