This report is composed on the basis of translating the latter part of The Black Button. The reason for such choice is that this part profoundly reflects and proclaims the purport of the novel, and authentically reveals and presents the moving cordiality between the ordinary people. The translator, based on translating this section under the guidance of the Semantic Translation(ST) and Communicative Translation(CT) Theory, hopes to convey the spirit and culture of the source language(SL) text to the target language(TL) readers on one hand, and to explore effective ways and methods of literary translation on the other. This report is divided into five chapters. Chapter One mainly introduces the relevant information of the SL text and the significance of the translation practice. Chapter Two gives a description of the general translation process. Chapter Three is the theoretical framework, specifically stating the meanings, enlightenment and guidance of the ST and CT Theory. Chapter Four, constituting the main body of the report, presents, via case analyses, the flexible application of that theory in the translation of cultural and non-cultural elements. Chapter Five is the conclusion, pointing out both the inadequacies and experiences so as to supply reference to other translators who have come across the translation of similar literary forms.
