Translation criticism is an essential link between translation theory and its practice.Its development has gone through three periods – philology criticism,structural criticism and deconstructive criticism.When criticism is established as a discipline or science,criticism becomes Criticism with capitalized "C"(hereafter referred to as Translation Criticism).Translation Criticism is the criticism of translation in disciplinary sense.It is first proposed by French translation scholar Berman in his monograph Toward a Translation Criticism: John Donne.Translation Criticism demonstrates the systematization and scientization of translation criticism.Berman's translation criticism theory not only includes insightful thoughts like translation criticism's positivity and its dignification,but also encompasses analytical path and evaluation criteria.Berman's contributions to the formation of Translation Criticism are reflected in three aspects-systematicness,literariness and scientificity.In terms of systematicness,Berman's translation criticism reflects the coexistence and interaction between criticism perspective and method;regarding literariness,Berman provides such suggestions as clarity,reflexivity and digressivity in criticism writing while reminds critics of avoiding common perils like the high reliance on terminology,intrusion of the original language,fastidious and isolated analysis.They not only make translation criticism take the form of essay but equip the criticism writing with stylistic features of translation criticism,making it translation criticism writing in real sense;in terms of scientificity,Berman utilizes the scientific thoughts of literary criticism and philosophical hermeneutics as well as the research methods of humanities to conduct translation criticism research.Berman's contributions to Translation Criticism can shed light on the development of translation criticism theory in the future,thereby serving to the establishment of translation criticism as a discipline.This research makes thorough analysis of translation criticism in disciplinary sense.It analyzes the notion and disciplinary requirements of Translation Criticismand points out that the formation condition is ripe for translation criticism to be established as a discipline.Translation Criticism is both the developmental demand of the time and the future direction of translation criticism.This research utilizes a unique angle to analyze Berman's translation criticism theory – Translation Criticism.It can provide a perspective for other translation scholars in their development of criticism theory.Moreover,it seeks to explore a universal model to evaluate the quality of translation criticism theory.
