A Study Of Subtitle Translation In China From The Perspective Of Hybridity

In recent years, films and TV series are more and more popular among theaudience.And compared with the number of people who read the foreign classics, thenumber of audience who watch foreign films and TV series is much larger and films andTV series can spread culture at higher speed. So the great influence of films and TVseries on cross-cultural communication should not be ignored. In order to make theaudience have a better understanding of the foreign films and TV series, advantage ofsubtitle translation should be taken. However, the practice of subtitle translation inChina lacks of the guidance of relevant translation theories. Besides, the quality ofsubtitle translation is poor. As a newly-developed field of translation in China, subtitletranslation does not attract translators’ enough attention. At present, only a few researcharticles discuss something about subtitle translation. What’s more, those researches aremonotonous. Therefore, it is necessary to have a further study on subtitle translation.Aiming at solving the above problems, this thesis has a comparison betweenforeignization and domestication and points out hybtidity is an appropriate translationstrategy to resolve the contradiction between foreignization and domestication. Andthen proves that under the guidance of hybridity strategy, the quality of subtitletranslation will be improved greatly. Compared with literary translation, subtitletranslation has its own features such as complementarity, conciseness, popularity,national characters and so on. Besides, it functions as a necessary means to help the foreign audience enjoy the films and an effective way to promote culturalcommunication. Therefore, when dealing with subtitle translation the translator shouldkeep the balance between readability of subtitle translation and retain exotic culture asmuch as possiple at the same time.To be concrete, in some cases, the linguistic forms should be domesticated andsometimes the cultural elements should be retained by foreignization method. In thisthesis, taking a Chinese film Confucius and an American TV series2Broke Girls asexamples, the author focuses on analyzing the detail translation skills applied to subtitletranslation under the guidance of hybridity strategy, which proves that hybridity strategyconforms to the features and functions of subtitle translation. By using hybriditystrategy, not only will the quality of subtitle translation be guaranteed but also a newperspective will be provided for the study of subtitle translation, which palys animportant role in promoting cultural communication.
