| This thesis focuses on Goldblatt·s three specific translation strategies ofDefamiliarization. About one hundred examples in Life and Death Are Wearing MeOut have been explored to illustrate that Goldblatt has satisfied western readers·expectations to experience exotic novelties and pushed other readers· readingappreciation to a new high. Howard Goldblatt used his translation of Life and Deathare Wearing Me out to prove that the strategy of defamiliarization is based on thefidelity of the original texts and content and form are of the same importance.Readers·reception theory has been used in this thesis as well since readers·receptionis an important element to restrict translators· uses of defamiliarization. Literaturetranslation facilitate readers to have a soul trip, which requires translators to distancereaders from original texts so that their reading appreciation level would be enhancedand reading habits would be fostered. Life and Death are Wearing Me Out has beenwell accepted by western readers and picked up by Goldblatt as his favorite.Goldblatt·s competence in Chinese and English, his perseverance and diligenceenable him to be an excellent translator. Goldblatt contributes his whole life to builda bridge between Chinese culture and western culture for his assistance forwesterners to have a more comprehensive picture of a new oriental world, whichmight be largely out of their original imagination. |
