BackgroundIn recent years, the topic about Internet addiction has been generally carried out, internet addicts have been gradually getting younger and younger, so researchers have developed a degree of Internet Addiction Scale and questionnaire to identify the addicts who would come from different groups, and gradually expand the study, researchers from initially healthy people extended to patients with depression and other special populations. Currently, the study on internet addiction have found that many factors contribute to addiction in China, such as personality, anxiety and depression, self-control, binding and so on. The subjects of above studies are all from universities, there are few studies about the military students, of course, this may be related to the special nature of military schools. In military schools, they take the management approaches of the militarization, in which there were not only rigorous educational measures but also some severe punitive measures with deterrent and seriousness. Since military students and the general students have a different environment and management, what would be changed about internet addiction in these different groups, what would be influenced by personal-ity and self-esteem.Objectives1. To explore the feature of internet addiction in military college students;2. To probe into the effects of personality and self-esteem on these changes, which may provide new evidence for the study of the theoretical aspects of Internet addiction.MethodsUsing random cluster sampling method, a total of600college students were assessed by3scales. The3scales used in this study were Self-Esteem Questionnaire of Undergraduates, EPQ (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire) and Different Types of Internet Addiction Scale for Undergraduates. The students come from the People’s Liberation Army soldiers and PLA Information Engineering College in Zhengzhou, Henan province, the main subjects were psychology graduate student. After verification, the valid questionnaires were572(Filter:A five consecutive identical choices, the lack of selected topics more, etc.), and the efficiency was95.3%. There are292freshmans,280senior students, in which there are518boys,54girls, and the mean age is19.90±1.71years old.ResultsIn demographic variables, about the internet addictive behaviors, there were no significantly differences in grade, gender, whether alone and students leaders (t=-1.149, P=0.251;t=0.146, P=0.884;t=1.593, P=0.112;t=-0.240, P=0.810), there was significant difference in the dimension about the home location (t=2.270, P=0.007).To explore the relationship between Internet addiction and self-esteem factors, we found that there was a positively significant correlation between important dimension and online game addiction(r=0.260; r=0.234; r=0.197; r=0.263; P<0.01). Internet addiction relationships, network information addiction, internet addiction scores has positively significant correlation with the appearance dimensioned=0.139; r=0.143; r-0.132; P<0.05). There was a significantly negative correlation about the sense of belonging dimensions, online game addiction, internet addiction relationships, network information addiction with the P dimension, but the correlation was not significant (P>0.05). Self-esteem and online game addiction, internet addiction relationships, network infoimation addiction and internet addiction scores was related but not significant (P>0.05).To investigate the relationship between internet addiction and the dimensions of personality, we found that the personality dimension P, N and L have significant correlations with online game addiction. There was a significantly positive correlation between the P dimension and network information addiction(r=0.135, P<0.05), there was a significantly negative correlation between P dimension and online game addiction(r=-0.222; r=-0.290; r=-0.241; P<0.01); N has a significant negative correlation with online game addiction, internet addiction relationships, network information and network addiction (r=-0.322; r=-0.425; r=-0.408; r=-0.425, P <0.01); and there was a significantly positive correlation with game addiction, internet addiction relationships, network information and addiction network (r=-0.272; r=-0.271; r=-0.142; r=-0.261, P<0.05, P<0.01).Multiple stepwise regression analysis between personality, self-esteem and internet addiction showed that N factor for online games has a significant negative predictor (t--2.842, P=0.005). L, an important dimension of feeling, a sense of dimension were positive predictors for online games addiction f power (t=2.514, P=0.012; t=3.583, P0.001;t=3.298, P=0.001). The regression equation was:Y=18.344-0.211X1+4.418X2+0.287X3+3.754X4-5.167X5.Y represents the online game, X1represents nervousness, X2stands for the lie, X3stands for important sense, X4stands for appearance sense, X5stands for self-esteem.N and P were significant negative predictors for the relationship of internet addiction (t=-7.321, P=0.000;t=-2.322, P=0.021), the important sense of dimension was a significant positive predictive power for the relationship of internet addiction (t=3.739, P <0.001). The regression equation was:Y=21.532-0.318X1+1.819X2-0.206X3. Y represents the network interpersonal, Xi represents neuroticism, X2represents spiritual quality,X3stands for appearance sense.N was a significant negative predictor for the network information addiction(t=-7.143, P<0.001), and the important sense of dimension has a significant positive predictive power for network information addiction (t=2.518, P=0.012). The regression equation was:Y=21.938-0.339Xi+1.311X2. Y stands for network information.X1 represents neuroticism, X2represents important sense.N had a remarkable negative predictive power for network information addiction(t=-7.410, P<0.001), and the important sense of dimension has a significant positive predictive power for network information addiction factor (t=3.797, P<0.001). The regression equation was:Y=62.874-0.982X+5.523X2, in which Y stands for internet addiction scores, X1representes neuroticism, X2represents important sense of dimension.Self-esteem play an partial intermediary role between personality and internet addiction, N dimensionality plays an intermediary role between dimensions of importance and online game addiction, and also plays an intermediary role between dimensions of importance and internet addiction, the mediate value were approximately18.46%,32.49%,24.71%.Conclusions1. Negative personality, such as lack of interpersonal support, sensitivity, depression and apathy is one of the factors leading to internet addiction.2. Personality factors neuroticism plays a partial intermediary role between self-esteem and internet addiction.
