Translation Of The Culture Of Feeling And The Culture Of Reason-Excerpt Of The Pursuit Of Glory:Europe1648-1815

This paper intends to present and discuss the strategies used to solve problems encountered during the translation of The Pursuit of Glory: Europe1648-1815. Then, under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the paper discusses and analyzes some examples from the translation with special emphasis on the response of the reader. This focus enables general distractions such as jargons or unfamiliar facts or historical events to be anticipated, so during translation the translator may use favorable readjustment to guide readers’ attention around them and back on the main narrative thread. The application of functional equivalence theory will shed some new light upon translation of historical literature.and will present new possibilities for future research on the reader oriented translation practices.This project is divided into two parts:Part One presents the original text and the translation of the excerpt of The Pursuit of Glory: Europe1648-1815. Part Two is the Critical Commentary which is composed of three sections. First it sets forth an introduction, in which a synopsis, significance of the project, and literature review are given; then it presents and discusses the theoretical framework and strategies used in rendering the excerpt into the target language which comprises the underpinning translation theory, namely Nida’s functional equivalence, and its usage in practice. Analyses of the above theory are also given along with examples quoted from the translation and are divided into three categories, the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. The last section is the conclusion which summarizes the previous discussion and the significance of the application of the above-mentioned theory.
