This paper aims to explore the translation of Tolkien's works from the perspective of Nida's functional equivalence theory, and summarize the requests for translators. The reader response is the focus of Nida's functional equivalence theory, and for the Chinese readers of Tolkien's works,it is crucial to feel the same fantasy atmosphere as the English readers. Therefore, in the process of analyzing and comparing two Chinese translations, the paper takes the reader response as the evaluation criterion to analyze and discuss the texts. The thesis analyzes and compares the two Chinese versions from the translation level of nouns, paragraphs and poems, and draws the conclusion that Deng Jiawan's translation is superior to Li Yao's translation. After a brief analysis of the reasons for the differences in the two versions of the translation, the paper concludes the requests for translators: the background of Christology translation, the study of linguistics, a professional translator, and also a book fans of Tolkien, and Deng Jiawan meets all the requirements.
