Project Report On Chinese Translation Of The Pilgrim’s Progress

The text of this project is the first part of The Pilgrim’s Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream (The Pilgrim’s Progress for short in the following).The Pilgrim’s Progress is highly intertextual with the Bible. It is estimated that the quotation part from the Bible accounts for80%of the novel (Wu,2007). So this study will be conducted under the guidance of the theory of intertextuality. Intertextuality means that one text is not isolated and it should be read, understood, and even translated under the influence of other texts.In this report, the writer applies two main study approaches:literature analysis and comparative analysis. Then the following translation methods are worked out:a. referring to authoritative Chinese Bible; b. imitating the style of Chinese Christian discourse; c. borrowing images from Chinese culture; d. maintaining foreign culture elements; e. adding necessary notes; f. adjustment. These methods could also be used in the translation of western literary works with biblical background.
