D.H.Lawrence is one of the most important litterateurs among Americanmodern literature in the20th century. He is also a prolific writer who createdlots of works in his life including novels, essays, travel notes andcommentary, etc., which almost cover all forms of literature. Lawrence hasspent his whole life in pursuit of place, which is the habitation of the naturalecology, and state of mind returning to human nature. His own experience aswell as his literary and artistic creation, shows the ecological wisdom toreturn to nature. Famous critic, Ray, Levis had remarked in his book NovelistD.H.Lawrence on the Lawrence original ecological consciousness, he said:"What Lawrence concerns is return to human’s nature, which is a deeprevelation to nature and humanity." Here, we can see that Lawrence’secological consciousness and he also put forward his own solution concerningabout human condition. Lawrence is a unique writer, he is not only a"prophet", who soberly realized the destruction of natural ecology caused bydevelopment of science, technology and industry which is the evil nature ofthe human nature, but also a "savior", who pays close attention to human’ssurvival and mental state, and is keen on the exploration of ecological idealplace and return of human nature. Therefore, from the view of ecologicalcriticism, it is of great significant to do some deep study on his ecologicalthought.Based on the ecological literary criticism theory, this paper will analyzesLawrence’s novel in-depth theory and study the Lawrence’s works from twoperspective: natural ecology and spiritual ecology aiming at extractingecological thought from Lawrence and his literary works. The framework ofthe thesis is as followed:The first part the author discussed the human’s dependence of the livingenvironment from the aspects of natural ecology. Mainly through theperspective of local consciousness of the first chapter, the author observedLawrence’s searching process to human survival habitat. Combined with the author’s roaming experience, from the memory place Italy’s roaming to theforeign country, this paper discussed the construction of the sense which playsa vital role to people’s recognition to the close relationship between humanand natureThe second part discussed from the spiritual ecological which is aboutcomplicated relationships among man and nature, man and themselves andman in society. The second chapter revealed the affinity between man andnature through nature scene in the mental state of human being, one’s fearand love of animals. The third chapter is done based on the research directionthat the essence of ecological crisis is the crisis of human nature. The author illustrated the theory from three aspects:"natural person","civilized person" and "awaken person" and promoted human nature againstcivilization under the depression of the alienation of human nature. The fourthchapter discussed person’s "rational consciousness" and "hemorrhagicconsciousness" relationship from the construction of ideal relationship. Torecover the natural state of people’s mind, you have to abandon the idea of acivilized society. If only you cast off the yoke of the rational society, releasepent-up instinct, and you can establish harmonious relationship of spirit andflesh.Through the analysis of Lawrence’s ecological thought, we can see thatLawrence’s artistic creation is of practical significance, because he puts theindustrial civilization of science and technology in the position asdestruction of the ecological environment and the distortion of human naturealien. Therefore Lawrence’s ecological thought makes us understand hisattitude of civilization and the spirit of the pursuit of natural harmony, whichgives us more clearly realization today when the modern civilization developsin certain degree.
